After a little cleanup with a cotton swab and some flux he plops in an Intel Pentium M LV 778. He then uses a solder braid and iron to remove extra solder from the footprint. heats the board from the underside until the solder melts and he can pluck off the old chip. This hack pulls it off using just a hot air gun.

Not only did upgrade to a 1.6 GHz chip, but he managed to get the computer to boot up with the new hardware in place.īGAs are notoriously hard to solder. But if you want to beef up the processor on your 701 Eee PC this is what you’ll need to go through. Then in 2018, the FCC issued an order that redefined broadband internet services, treating them as "information services" under Title I of the Communications Act instead of more regulated "telecommunications services" under Title II of the Communications Act.Personally we find this Ball-Grid Array chip-swap rather horrifying. In 2017, under the leadership of then-chairman Ajit Pai, the US Federal Communications Commission tossed out America's net neutrality rules, to the delight of the internet service providers that had to comply. SB 822, for example, forbids "zero-rating" programs that exempt favored services from customer data allotments, paid prioritization, and blocking or degrading service. The decision is a blow to the large internet service providers that challenged California's regulations, which prohibit network practices that discriminate against lawful applications and online activities. The US Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday upheld a lower court's refusal to block California's net neutrality law (SB 822), affirming that state laws can regulate internet connectivity where federal law has gone silent. In that vein, this column has previously covered the PC releases of Death Stranding (not for everyone) and Days Gone (not perfect), and we've learnt that the measure of a port is "how badly have they fucked this up?" Continue reading The RPG has entered its third year as God of War becomes the latest in a number of erstwhile "exclusives" that have made the leap to the desktop. We played it and loved it, though without a dedicated spot on the site for gaming it would have felt strange to suddenly write about the experience. Back in 2018, The Register was lucky enough to receive a copy ahead of its original release. How do you make a flawless PlayStation exclusive even better? The answer seems to be to port it to PC, which is what happened with God of War on 14 January. Long may this trajectory of PlayStation titles eventually coming to PC continue – because we now have God of War. There's a pleasing lack of stickers too, with only the Intel Atom label besmirching the palmrest area. It has a decent colour scheme as well, the black screen surround nicely setting off the white of the lower half of the device, though we're not entirely sure what the red rims on the lid hinge are all about. The keyboard is well laid out, firm and responsive, the screen hinge is solid, and the fan is never intrusive once it fires up to cool things down. Overall, the AA1's build quality is excellent.

That's to accommodate the AA1's larger keyboard, which Acer claims is 85 per cent of the size of a full laptop keyboard - larger and less cramped than the one on the Asus and, consequently, easier for bigger hands to use. It's wider than the Eee: about 25mm more than the Eee 900, for example. So the portability box is well and truly ticked. Out of the box, the AA1 - as fans call it - is a petite 249 x 170 x 29mm and weighs in at a correspondingly featherweight 995g (2.19lbs).
